A Journey Through 800 Years of History
Consistently ranked as one of Ireland’s most beloved attractions, Hook Lighthouse was voted Ireland’s Favourite Hidden Gem in the Irish Travel Awards. It is also the most visited attraction in County Wexford, drawing visitors year-round who are eager to explore its rich history and spectacular coastal views.
The award-winning guided tour brings the story of the lighthouse vividly to life. Visitors climb the 115 well-worn steps of the ancient tower, moving through thick stone chambers that have stood for eight centuries. Along the way, engaging storytelling and immersive displays transport guests through the centuries.
Your journey begins with the story of St. Dubhán, the 5th-century monk whose community once kept a warning beacon burning on the headland to guide ships safely through dangerous waters.
Further up the tower, visitors meet the legendary William Marshal, the great medieval knight who commissioned the lighthouse in the 13th century. Marshal built the tower to guide ships trading with his bustling port at nearby New Ross, part of the powerful network of settlements he established throughout the southeast of Ireland.
Higher still, the story turns to the lives of lighthouse keepers who dedicated their working lives to maintaining the vital light that protected generations of sailors navigating the coastline.
At the top, visitors step onto the balcony where fresh sea air and breathtaking views await. The panorama stretches across miles of spectacular coastline and out across the meeting point of the Irish Sea and Atlantic Ocean. The lightkeepers’ watchroom also provides a comfortable panoramic viewing space where visitors can pause and take in the extraordinary landscape.
