The great English composer Sir Edward Elgar is featured in the latest Senior Times Classical Collection hosted by John Low. This just released podcast centres on the complete Cockaigne Overture which Elgar wrote at the turn of the 20th century and depicts the hustle and bustle of Victorian London with the sound of horse drawn buses and cries from the street
In complete contrast the moving slow movement of Elgar’s cello concerto follows. This has become one of the most performed cello concertos in the repertoire and shot to international prominence with the iconic recording made in the 1960s by the renowned English cellist Jacqueline Du Pre, who died tragically young, with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John BarbIrolli.
The podcast also includes works by Mozart, Beethoven, Rossini, Handel, Bach and Tchaikovksy
