New Adult Literacy for Life e-learning course to raise awareness about literacy

Creating a ‘literacy aware’ and ‘literacy friendly’ society is essential in developing an equal society for all

That’s why the Adult Literacy for Life (ALL) Office have launched a new one-hour course this World Literacy Day on 8 September to help people across Ireland understand how to support people with unmet literacy needs. This is a free course for anyone wanting to learn more about literacy, and of interest to people who deal with the public in their work, including staff and volunteers. It will help people to become literacy aware and respond sensitively to unmet literacy needs.

    What can I learn?

You can learn how to become literacy aware with this course. Literacy learners share first-hand experiences of the challenges they face with literacy, the benefits of getting support with literacy and share their experiences of accessing public services with an unmet literacy need. You can also learn from literacy ambassadors who share guidance on how staff can use a literacy friendly approach to support people with literacy needs. By completing the videos and a range of interactive exercises and scenarios, you can learn how to be more literacy aware.

    The course looks at:

    1 Literacy in life

    ·       What is literacy and where do we need literacy skills.

    ·       Literacy, numeracy and digital literacy needs in Ireland.

    ·       How do literacy needs affect organisations and remove barriers.

2 Using a literacy friendly approach ·       Thinking about the customer.

    ·       The universal precautions approach.

    ·       Literacy friendly standards.

    3 Tips and tools

    ·       Responding sensitively to literacy needs.

    ·       Using plain language.

    ·       Breaking down information using chunk and check.

Why do we need this course?

Our world is changing, and it can be hard to keep up. Many of us find it a challenge to understand a bill, read a prescription or use a smartphone, and that’s okay. It’s more common than you think.

Literacy is a human right. In Ireland, there are many people with unmet literacy, numeracy or digital literacy needs. Literacy is everywhere in our lives and everyone should have the literacy, numeracy and digital literacy to participate fully in society and succeed in life.
