Iarnród Éireann has confirmed completion of a major phase in the redevelopment of Ceannt Station
Following successful completion of work on the curved glazed roof and the new platform 5 in late 2025, Saturday 18 April 2026 has seen the new platforms 3 and 4 now entering service alongside platform 5.
In addition to the new platforms opening:

• Customers will now enter and exit on the southern side of the station and enjoy access to the new southern concourse including a new waiting room, new toilet facilities and use of the new ticket validators.
• The northern side of the station and Platform 1 will now close for redevelopment works.
• Works on platform 2 continue and are expected to be complete over the coming months alongside the launch of an improved retail offering in the station.
This latest milestone equates to roughly half of the station footprint now reopened to the public, ensuring improved passenger experience and a more streamlined service for local rail users.
Funded by the Department of Housing’s Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) and the National Transport Authority, the Ceannt Station redevelopment is delivering a modern, fully integrated and fully accessible transport hub in the heart of Galway.
Commencing in early 2024, the project remains on programme, with substantial completion targeted for August 2026. Rail and bus services will continue to operate from the station for the duration of the works. The project is being delivered by BAM Ireland for Iarnród Éireann.
Customer are asked to note new platform boarding arrangements that will now be in place. Iarnród Éireann wishes to thank customers for their patience as this transformative project is being delivered.
As a gateway to the city, the investment will deliver:
• More platforms for more capacity, increasing the number of platforms from two to five, supporting significantly expanded rail services well into the future
• New southern entrance and façade to Ceannt Station, creating an attractive modern station including new customer facilities, retail units and toilet facilities.
• Enhanced connectivity and interchange between rail and bus services, making it easier and more attractive to customers to use multiple modes, and including improved accessibility and waiting areas, as well as Bus Éireann ticket office improvements.
• New roof on the existing train hall to transform the platform and circulation areas into bright, welcoming spaces.
• Renovations to the existing northern elevation, prioritising accessibility and customer mobility through the entire station complex.
• Infrastructure works including track and resignalling to support the increase in the number of platforms, and services including drainage etc.
The project supports the sustainable growth and development envisaged for the city under Project Ireland 2040. It also supports Galway City Council’s strategic development goal of creating a public transport hub for the city at Ceannt station, as part of the Galway Transport Strategy
