The Shackleton Experience, Athy, Co. Kildare
The Shackleton Experience, located in the heart of Athy, Co. Kildare, is the only institution in the world dedicated to the extraordinary life and achievements of Ernest Shackleton, the legendary polar explorer who was born in nearby Kilkea in 1874.
The world-class attraction uses cutting-edge technology, dramatic digital storytelling, and sensory effects to bring Shackleton’s inspiring journey to life – from his birthplace in Kildare to the vast polar ice caps. Visitors will gain a unique glimpse into the remarkable life of Shackleton and the Heroic Age of Polar Exploration as it unfolds across 11 immersive galleries.
Housed in Athy’s beautifully restored 300-year-old Town Hall on Emily Square, the venue features a striking glass shard extension in the shape of an iceberg, while an iconic statue of Ernest Shackleton stands proudly at the entrance.
Visitors can trace Shackleton’s inspiring journey, exploring the determination and leadership that defined his legacy.
They can also discover in detail the three expeditions he led to the Antarctic, including the legendary Endurance expedition (1914–1917) where Shackleton managed to bring the entire crew home safely without the loss of a single life after their ship sank in a frozen sea hundreds of miles from civilisation.
A highlight of this world-class attraction is a deeply immersive experience that places visitors alongside the crew of Endurance as they make their remarkable escape from the ice-bound ship, with crashing waves and wind effects making the journey feel as real as possible.
